No little girl blue

Loica arrives at the Sunset Jazz Club in Alexandria. She’s happy to go stag. A jazz club is, after all, an excellent place to meet single, educated, affluent men. In this case, it’s a shame that the impressively muscled figures of Anubis and Thoth are just fibreglass decor. Who needs education, Loica asks, when you’ve got size?

Although Loica’s ensemble is not available at the Black and Blue Fair, I do want to devote this post to raising awareness of the prevalence and costs of mental illness. Everyone in my immediate family has suffered from depression, and it affected each of us in a different way. I and several of my friends have lost loved ones and mentors to suicide. Our culture needs to destigmatize depression. Men are discouraged from acknowledging any form of “weakness,” and are thus less likely to seek treatment and recover. Depression may be more prevalent among women because they have fewer opportunities in a patriarchal culture. While I am aware of the critiques of psychiatry and the pharmaceutical industry, I think that a cautious consumer can benefit from talk and drug therapy when combined. I hope that you will take the time to read the statistics printed on the walls at the fair. Although I can see how statistics on the dollar-cost in decreased productivity might galvanize a capitalist society into taking action on mental illness, I think it more likely that those stats will contribute to prejudice. We need to educate ourselves about people’s experiences with mental illness if we are going to understand the real costs to society.

If you are suffering from depression, fight it, fight like hell. I did. Loica would. And she’d do it in heels.
