Sometimes your friendly neighbourhood blogger gets tired of sorting new items into “urban,” “high-fashion,” “nerdy” and “goth” folders. Sometimes your fr’ly. ‘hood bl’er. goes nuts trying to figure out the expiration date on “old” skins and hairdos. Today this blogger is mixing things up and bringing back fave skins from the not-so-distant past. The spring line from Paperbag is literally epic, and it’s full of affordable goodies like Portia’s büb-friendly shoulder-baring peach top. Ima get back there for more to share. Portia’s new techno-hottie shorts are available in a range of colours from Shi.

Portia’s butter-soft leather jacket is a group gift from Tokidoki. If you aren’t a member of the group, you can buy the jacket in solid tones or florals at TDRFusion, or shop the whole range of colours at the main store. The laced, tight leather jeans are a 15L Easter Hunt item from Ricielli. I want them in RL. As well as the legs to wear them.

Might have to weaken

Over the past year I’ve made several references to the inevitable, premature end of my career as a scholar. For years I was powerless to do anything about it because I was powerless to do anything, period. I’ve been given a reprieve by the uni, I’m back not just to writing but to writing fluently, and I feel strong. I was lucky enough to find a wonderful therapist: if I have someone in my corner I am more than able to fight the shit that’s keeping me down. But I’m certain that my recovery is due mostly to the antidepressants, which I should have started on years ago. Why didn’t I? Because lying on the couch unable to do my own work and spending less and less time doing anything for classes felt like a normal reaction to several awful life experiences and to the disappointment of being resented by students and discounted by many members of the college (though not by the people in my actual department). I also didn’t think I was actually depressed because the depression I’d experienced in my twenties came in the form of sadness, not inactivity. Crying every day was a sign that something was wrong. Given the way my life had been going over the past five years, it seemed entirely appropriate for me to be the human equivalent of the boulder that seals a tomb. I don’t think I ever truly believed the claim that when people are depressed they don’t know it or don’t know the extent of it. I believe it now. Does this sound like some dumb testimonial? I could say more, but I won’t. There’s one last thing that I need to write and hope to recall if things go badly again: when I am a valued member of a wonderful community, I do pretty fucking well. Being part of a wretched community that conspires actively to distribute quicksand-like suffering in a dreadful inversion of egalitarian principles? I go under.
On the fashion front, things are looking up with the opening of Genre, a fantasy maven’s dream, where I picked up the most flattering skin Voshie Paine has ever done for La petite morte. There are three makeups in one lovely skin tone, with elf ears and Lolas Tango appliers included. Each is only 100L. (I die.) The dress Portia wears here is a 70L reopening goodie from Violent Seduction’s outpost on the Cupcake sim. Finally, [e] (elikatira) is having a 70% off hairdo sale. (It’s supposed to be a retirement sale, but everything seems to be discounted.) Don’t be flummoxed if a mouse-over shows the usual price of the hair packs. There’s always a siren

I took my mother to Anna Karenina because I thought it was a mother type of movie. And I loved it. Tom Stoppard’s script is so spare that it feels like poetry. The action takes place mostly on and around the stage of an old theatre, but, this being Russia, there are escapes into the countryside in snowy winter and grassy summer. I didn’t intend to emulate the film, but Portia ended up out in the snow in a big warm fur and prowling the floorboards of a ruined theatre.

I combined Aliza Karu’s gold-sequined Minni gown and headdress with a colour-change jabot from Zib Scaggs at Zibska. I want to thank both of these creators for helping me grope my way to glamour in 2012.

The fades version of Tableau Vivant’s Ewing hairdo is available at My Attic. There is a blue-silver metallic version along with the raspberry version shown here. I have to say that Aida Ewing’s fantasy skins for Glam Affair are always a pleasure to blog. The best ones feature a skin tone that inches just past plausible.

Heart hurt

I had thought of a couple of funny scenarios for showing off La Petite Morte’s Bruised Heart set, which includes a bandaged heart and the Bernice skin you see here. But then I lost my dearest SL playmate, though not my friend, and I don’t feel like laughing. I would say that I don’t look as bad as Portia does, but she looks *divine*! The colours really pop, the lipstick matches her eyes. And that glam updo from Paper Couture doesn’t hurt either. (What an odd turn of phrase on a painful day. /me hugs heart.)

Portia is also wearing the Cupid Hunt gift dress from MIU and the grey FurFur jacket by Nikukyu, which I found a while ago at the Creators’ Pavilion.
