This settler’s blog comes to you from the traditional homelands of the Council of Three Fires: the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Bodéwadmiakiwen Nations. They are the signatories to Cession 78. Many other tribes, such as the Myaamia, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Michigamea, Kiikaapoi, Kaskaskia, Peoria, Sauk, and Fox, also call this area home. There is unceded land in this territory. Chicago was extended with landfill along the shore of Lake Michigan. Most of this land did not exist when Cession 78 was proclaimed in 1835. Thus this land was never ceded.
